Alpha Phi Alpha™, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded on December 4, 1906™ at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. On May 23, 1983, Brothers in the Kappa Tau Lambda Chapter in Valdosta, Ga. intake process gave rise to approximately five new Alpha brothers in the Tifton area. On December 1, 1989, a formal letter was made by Brother Mitchell to Brother Darryl R. Mathews, Director of Marketing/Membership, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Chicago, Il.
